[HHL gGmbH - 24.04.2013] They have become vital to present-day managers: international competencies - at best obtained directly abroad. It is no longer just the full-time students but, more and more, part-time students wishing to leave Germany for a while to study abroad. Therefore, HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management now offers the "StudyAbroad - Advanced Management" elective as part of its Part-time Master in Management Program (M.Sc.). Fully integrated into the program structure, the new option opens up a large number of opportunities to gain international experience during the studies, which otherwise take place in Leipzig. HHL's part-time students may study at one of over 110 partner universities of the Leipzig business school. They will receive credits for the classes taken abroad, which will be fully incorporated into the final grade at HHL.

Thorsten Daniel, who is completing the part-time M.Sc. program at HHL alongside his job as Manager Business Development at arvato, a Bertelsmann subsidiary, decided to spend a term abroad at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) in South Africa. In addition to the intercultural aspect, there is something else the 28-year-old greatly appreciated: "I found it a fantastic experience to be a full-time student for half a year since I already completed my Bachelor program on a part-time basis." Thanks to the support from the International Relations Offices at HHL and the South African university, the organization of the term abroad went smoothly for Thorsten Daniel. The student, who is originally from the region of East Westphalia, has a piece of advice: "It is important to look into everything very early on - the application at the partner university, your visa, immigration law as well as other legal requirements in the respective country -especially when you have to fulfill your professional and academic duties as well."

Thorsten Daniel thinks the term abroad is worth the additional expense automatically arising in this context. Cost factors are, among others, travel and the cost of living in the respective country. Since the renowned South African business school is a partner of HHL, no further tuition fees are incurred. Thorsten Daniel says: "In order to avoid an excessive financial burden I recommend students to apply for a scholarship from one of the numerous institutions early on or to simply speak to their employer to find out about whether there are any opportunities of financial support and what the extent of these might be."

Release from employer essential for term abroad

The term abroad project can only be successful if approved by the boss. Thorsten Daniel on the required release from the employer: "It is advisable to include your boss in your plans as soon as possible, discuss all issues openly and to keep him or her posted on the progress of the individual stages. I am certain superiors appreciate applicants coming into the first talk with a detailed concept. After all, there are various ways to map out the authorization. It all depends, of course, on the company, the boss and his or her attitude towards the topic of on-the-job training. Some good and well-considered arguments, the power of persuasion and personal connection with the boss help round out your personal strategy."

Thorsten Daniel has not regretted his decision to study abroad for a single second. "This experience exceeded my expectations. I am so glad to have chosen South Africa and USB. South Africa is a fascinating country where you can discover new things every day. In addition to that, USB is an excellent business school, which was recently awarded a triple accreditation. Offering a first-class and dynamic learning environment, it reminds of HHL in many respects."
